Network Automation with David

Hi!

I’m David Lunel, a network automation consultant.

My career started in 2008 on a service desk. What began as troubleshooting tickets gradually turned into a deep curiosity for how networks actually work. That curiosity carried me from service desk roles into network engineering, and eventually into network automation.

Early on, I worked with large telecom providers in the Netherlands, where I was exposed to complex, large-scale network designs and a wide range of telecom technologies. Later, through consultancy and secondment roles, I moved into enterprise environments, working on projects for banks, e-commerce platforms, government organizations, and other regulated industries.

Over the years, I’ve had hands-on experience across most areas of network infrastructure: routing and switching, datacenter, security, and wireless. From complex DNS setups and advanced BGP configurations to large-scale firewall policy management, and yes, even the physical side like racking, stacking, and wiring switches. Those years built a solid, practical foundation and a healthy respect for how fragile and critical networks can be.

My automation journey started around 2018. What was once a “nice to have” quickly became a necessity. The workload kept growing, and a significant part of my time was spent on repetitive operational tasks that didn’t benefit from manual effort.

To work more efficiently and reduce operational overhead, I began experimenting with automation. I started small, using Bash and Python to automate day-to-day network tasks. Over time, this evolved into a more structured approach: reusable code, consistent data models, purpose-built tooling, and design patterns specifically suited for network environments.

Today, I work at Network to Code as a senior consultant, delivering automation projects for Fortune 500 customers. My focus is on building solutions that are not just technically sound, but also practical, maintainable, and aligned with how teams actually operate.

I’ve been fortunate to see the industry from many angles, and that perspective continues to shape how I approach automation: with respect for the past, an eye on scalability, and a strong focus on real-world impact.
